Revolutionary breakthrough in lithium battery! Life and performance have been qualitatively improved

  • According to media reports, Rice University in the United States has developed a new type of battery electrode material. Although graphite has been proven to be the best and most reliable substance used to make cathodes, it contains a limited number of ions. Researchers have always hoped to replace graphite with lithium metal foil, which can hold more ions, make the battery charge faster, and bring higher battery capacity.
    However, the growth of lithium dendrites is one of the fundamental problems affecting the safety and stability of lithium metal batteries. Lithium dendrites will continue to consume electrolyte during the growth process and cause irreversible deposition of metallic lithium, forming dead lithium, resulting in low coulombic efficiency. It even pierces the diaphragm and causes a short circuit inside the battery, causing thermal runaway of the battery and causing a combustion explosion.

    To this end, Rice University researchers attached a special tape to the copper current collector that forms part of the lithium anode and heated it to 2026°C through laser processing. This process can transform the tape into a porous coating, mainly composed of silicon and oxygen, and a small amount of special material graphene. Preliminary experiments have shown that the coating can be used as a protective layer on the current collector component without causing lithium dendrites to be generated in the battery.

    The researchers said that compared with ordinary lithium metal batteries, lithium metal batteries using the new layer have three times longer lifespan, and they still maintain 70% capacity after 60 charge and discharge cycles. More importantly, the technology is fast and safe, and can be operated at room temperature.
